How Private Tutoring Works

You get to drive your personal plan. You choose the number of sessions and your schedule and Barak makes sure that every minute of tutoring is as effective as possible at raising your student’s score. Contact us to schedule a short consultation and make a plan for your student.

Sessions are 45 minutes. Barak teaches all of his students personally on Zoom. All classes are recorded so students get the added benefit of being able to watch the recordings for extra practice and to make sure they understand 100% of the material covered. Zoom also allows Barak to teach all over the world. If you are an international student, let us know. We have special session times available to help with the time difference.

A pen, scrap paper, and the calculator your student plans to use on test day are a must for each session.

You are not required to do anything prior to your first session. Barak will use that time to go over tips, tricks, and strategies for the test. All subsequent sessions, you will choose a practice test and may be given supplemental materials as well. You can do a fully timed test, or if you are short on time, you can do each section separately.

Homework:

There is a direct correlation between effort and score increase. Students who invest double the amount of time practicing between sessions generally get far more than double the increase. There are three types of homework:

  • Practice Tests. For the ACT, there are dozens of previously administered ACTs you will have access to. For the SAT, there are five released tests and we have additional supplemental materials as well as paper-based SATs you can use for practice. Each session (other than the first) begins with the list of mistakes to identify areas for improvement.
  • Use MathChops.com daily. Even five minutes per day can cause a significant rise in scores and is worth the minimal cost. (Obviously, far more is far better: one student last summer went above and beyond and raised his math score from 600 to 760 in a single month by doing 3,199 questions in conjunction with tutoring.) Here is a one-minute video explaining how it works.
  • Watch the recording of the previous tutoring session. This is essential in order to understand 100% of the material discussed.
